Sod Care
Proper sod care, including watering, mowing, fertilizing, and pest control, is essential for a healthy, attractive, and sustainable lawn.
Water the Sod
Initial Watering
Immediately after installation, water the sod thoroughly. Ensure the water penetrates the soil beneath the sod to encourage deep root growth.
Regular Watering
Keep the sod consistently moist for the first 2 weeks. Water daily or as needed to prevent the sod from drying out. Gradually reduce watering frequency as the sod establishes roots in the soil.
First Mowing
Wait to Mow
Wait until the sod has rooted into the soil, which usually takes about 2-3 weeks. Check by gently tugging on the sod; it should resist being lifted.
Mow High
When you do mow, set your mower to the highest setting. Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade length at a time.
Ongoing Maintenance
Fertilize
Apply a balanced fertilizer about 4-6 weeks after installation to encourage healthy growth.
Monitor Watering
Adjust your watering schedule based on weather conditions. Established sod typically needs about 1 inch of water per week.
Prevent Weeds
Keep an eye out for weeds and remove them promptly. Consider using a pre-emergent herbicide if weeds become a problem.
